Cutting Plans That Get More Out of a 2440 x 1220 Sheet

Nesting layouts for shelving, carcasses and van fit-outs

Most sheets are lost at the drawing stage, not at the saw. By the time you are pushing a board through, the layout is already decided, and a bad one leaves you with a pile of strips that fit nothing.

Start with the finished part sizes, then add the blade kerf and any edge-banding allowance before you draw a single line. A 3 mm kerf across eight cuts eats 24 mm of sheet, which is often the difference between a clean run of shelves and one short panel.

Shelving runs

For a standard 300 mm deep shelf, rip the sheet into four 300 mm strips and keep the leftover 20 mm as a spacer or a cleat. Grain direction should run along the span, not across it, or the shelf will sag sooner than you expect on anything wider than 900 mm.

Kitchen carcasses

Carcass sides, tops and bottoms usually nest best when you cut the tall panels first and work the shorter pieces into the offcut field. Leave 2 mm on each edge if you plan to band them, and mark the banded edge on the sheet so it does not end up on the inside of a cupboard.

Van conversion panels

Wall and ceiling panels rarely follow a rectangle, so cut the largest curved piece first and use the negative space for the smaller trim. Keep offcuts at 300, 400 and 600 mm widths where you can. Those sizes come back on almost every job.
